1. Who is the center of interest in this story (whom is the story about)?
2. Discuss the characterization of Victor. Describe him, and describe how we know about him (authorial characterization strategies).
3. What is the purpose of the short interludes describing events in the lives of Victor and Thomas in the years preceding the time of the story?
Good Country People and Everything That Rises Must Converge
1. Describe what you see about Joy/Hulga and Manly Pointer. Describe each individually, and then comment on how those two characters together help to show each other and overall meaning. (300 words)
2. Describe what you see about Julian and Julian's mother. Describe each individually, and then comment on how those two characters together help to show each other and overall meaning. (300 words)
3. For each short story, explain how one of the fiction elements (from the handout I gave you) helps O'Connor to affect the reader and contribute to the story. You cannot choose character. Describe that contribution. Choose a different element for each story. (200-250 words for each story)
4. Compare the two short stories. How are they similar (in character, theme, setting, author strategy, narrator, etc.) (250-300 words)
